Technology Line 5

Along the tram line 5 you can explore the “Chemical Region” of Halle and surroundings on one of Europe’s longest tram routes. Our Technology Line 5 passes through locations that shaped the whole region in the past and continue to shape it at present and in future. This trip takes you from Halle via Schkopau, Merseburg, and Leuna up to Bad Dürrenberg. On the way you learn where the world’s first coal briquette factory was built, who founded the chemical site in Leuna, why NASA is working with ultrasound from Halle, and much more. Park Railway Peißnitzexpress

Only a few steps from the line 5 tram stop Weinberg Campus you reach the Peißnitz Island, the green lung of Halle. Here you find the Peißnitzexpress that offers fun for young and old from Easter until the end of October. This narrow gauge railway has a track gauge of 600mm. On a length of 2 kilometres adults and children alike can explore the Peißnitz Island.

Technological Campus        

The technological centre at Weinberg Campus is one of the top ten technology centres in Germany; and the largest in central Germany. It includes modern research facilities for biotechnology, biomedical science, medical technology, environmental and process technology, nanotechnology, as well as information and automation technology. Some of the companies based in the centre have won various innovation awards.

Halloren and Salt Works Museum

The Halloren and Salt Works Museum exhibits Halle’s economic roots: salt production. The main attraction of the museum is a demonstration of the process of extracting salt from evaporation beds. With a yearly production of 100 tonnes of salt, it is the only salt-producing museum in Europe. Besides that, it offers a growing number of exciting activities in the world of technology, especially for young people.

Mitteldeutsches Multimediazentrum (MMZ)

The Central German Multimedia Centre is a modern technological centre that lies directly on the banks of the Saale river. At this location there are over 30 companies from the multimedia business in addition to the faculty of media and communication studies of the Martin Luther University.

DB Museum

To reach the Deutsche Bahn museum in Halle, take tram line 10 from Hauptbahnhof (main railway station) to S-Bahnhof Steintorbrücke. In this museum of you can see a collection of early 20th-century steam, diesel, and electric locomotives of the former Deutsche Reichsbahn (German National Railway).

Tram stop Pfännerhöhe

Historic Car Park

A few steps away to the west from the stop Pfännerhöhe you reach Germany’s oldest multi-storey car park. The structure was built in 1929 and renovated in 2007, and offers parking space for 150 cars.

Tram stop Damaschkestraße

Historical Technology Centre

The historical technology centre of the Stadtwerke Halle (municipal utilities) is not far from the stop Damaschkestraße. After a visit of the centre you’ll know what an ampere meter is used for, how sewage drains are cleaned, and how long trams have been in use in Halle.

World’s First Coal Briquette Factory

A few steps northeast from the stop, at Chemiestraße, is the former location of the world’s first coal briquette factory. It was built at the colliery “Theodor” in Ammendorf, and had the world’s first briquette press.

Germany’s Longest Railway Bridge

In between Halle and Schkopau you’ll cross below the longest railway bridge in Germany. Built from 2006–2013 it is remarkable for having a high-speed rail junction on the bridge, with one branch carrying trains from Erfurt towards Halle and the other branch carrying trains towards Leipzig.

ValuePark/Dow Olefinverbund GmbH

A little further west of the tram stop the Schkopau plant of the Dow Olefinverbund GmbH is situated. The subsidiary of the American Dow Chemical Company continues the tradition of more than 75 years of the chemical location Schkopau, and produces powerful synthetics and products for the automobile industry. A large portion of the products are further processed by national and international synthetics-processing companies that are located at the Dow ValuePark. Dow also operates the largest non-commercial training centre for natural science and technical professions at the Schkopau site.

Near the tram stop Am Schloß you can visit the EON power plant in Schkopau, one of the largest producers of electricity in Germany.

Tram stop Merseburg-Zentrum

Museum Park for Aviation and Technology

Take the bus line C westbound from the Merseburg main railway station and go on a journey through time at the Museum Park for Aviation and Technology. With over 60,000 exhibits this former airfield is a real time machine. In several hangars you can see planes, helicopters, old cars, and fire engines. The automobile hall contains a special attraction: a DeLorean, known to many from the film “Back to the Future”.

You can reach the German Chemistry Museum (located directly behind the Merseburg University of Applied Sciences) with the bus line A, direction Großkayna. Here you can explore the development of the chemical industry in the chemical region of Central Germany.

Take a deep breath and enjoy a micro climate similar to the air at the North Sea at the Bad Dürrenberg spa gardens. The fine brine fog generated by Europe’s largest connected graduation towers has similarities to maritime climate; it is considered especially beneficial in alleviating respiratory diseases.

Train Museum Kötzschau

You can reach the Train Museum Kötzschau from the train station Bad Dürrenberg on the regional train line 125 (destination Leipzig). This museum exhibits a double-track H0-scale model railway with a special feature: this layout is controlled from an original railway training control centre.
